Sarawak Kuching Food Guide

Food is important in preserving cultural identity. For this reason, I want to share with you some of the famous Kuching food during our travel with kids in Kuching.

Kolo Mee and Sarawak Laksa
kuching_Kolo mee & Sarawak LaksaFirst and foremost, Kole mee and Sarawak laksa are the a must eat food in Kuching, Sarawak. You can easily find those two dishes in Kuching and the taste more or less are the same. Let me know, if you got specific stall to go. Some suggested Kim Joo restaurant.

Lepau Restaurant

Lepau, translated from the Kayan language, means temporary farm-hit. The Restaurant serving authentic Sarawakian in the heart of Kuching city (beside Grand Supreme Hotel). The environment and ambience reflects the feel of a traditional Kayan “kampung” farm-hut.

Their food prepared by a team of enthusiastic and passionate food lovers. Not sure whether their restaurant is halal certified but serve no pork and lard. Accordingly, Lepau Restaurant is the winner of the Best Innovative Ethnic Restaurant for the 20th Malaysia Tourism Award 2018. To conclude, the food is delicious and the price is reasonable.

Black Bean Coffee

According to locals, Black Bean Coffee is the Starbucks of Sawarak. They serve freshly house roasted specialty coffee (100% pure Sarawak Specialty Coffee). Sarawak Liberica Coffee Beans are grown in the hilly areas of southern Sarawak. I ordered The Americano and the taste is quite strong and bitter flavour.

My Barok village
Yet another well-known Sarawakian foods “My Barok village”. To get there from Kuching waterfront, you can take Sarawak traditional boat (sampan) for only RM1 as shown in the youtube video below.

The restaurant seems to be quite popular among the locals. Overall, great environment, reasonable price and delicious food. However, according to reviews the waiting times might be longer during weekend or public holidays.
